Apperance
One of the most striking things about Riza Hawkeye is the color of her eyes, a blend of red-amber and brown that carries a calm, controlled luminescence and seems to see straight into the core of anything she looks upon. Her hair is blonde and hangs to the center of her back when not put up into a twist or bun but usually she keeps it out of the way with a practical brown clip, her bangs hanging to one side and almost across her eye. Of about average height and lithe she moves with a surefooted grace and her face is pleasantly pretty though usually carrying a serious expression. Always a sensible girl she tends toward the most reasonable clothing for the environment, black slacks and fitted shirts to hide her full-back tattoo, with black boots and a tan canvas jacket. Over this she often wears a neutrally-colored woolen cape to keep off more wind and pulling the cape over her face to seem unobtrusive. Her military surplus backpack holds her few supplies as well as the locked box with all of the correspondences she's meant to deliver. Being a gunner she wears a revolver at her side, two pistols on under-arm holsters under her coat and a sniper rifle over her shoulder, as well as having plenty of ammunition on her person at all times.
Personality
With her aura of calm restraint and expression of cool disinterest most would assume that Riza was a disinterested, critical and meticulous person more intent on reaching her goals than interacting with a good deal of people- and that would be partly correct. When around strangers or those she's unsure of she puts up a very guarded demeanor, though she always remains completely polite. Her voice has the cadence of one well educated and intelligent and often has a tone of irony when she's displeased. Though she holds herself with confidence it isn't in her nature to push herself forward and demand attention; instead she simply does what needs doing, whether it brings her recognition or not. She takes a good deal of pride in staying as clean as possible and making sure all of her possessions are in good order and if anything she sees is out of place she tries to fix it. Her powers of observation and her extraordinarily sharp eyesight give the impression that she can see straight into a person with only a glance, which can put anyone attempting to lie to her distinctly on edge. She hates to be beholden to anyone and does what she can to repay any debt.
Around those she trusts Riza warms up a good deal, showing a softer side to herself and even her dryly sarcastic sense of humor. She has a protective instinct toward animals and children and though she does have some high expectations of them they also receive her compassionate care and affection. Once Riza decides that someone is her friend or ally she is ceaselessly loyal to them and will do nearly anything to help them reach their goals. Though practical she does have dreams of a better time when people are truly free of the stranglehold of the corporations and will willingly follow the person most able to bring that to fruition. The few friends and compatriots she has are very dear to her and her protectiveness extends to them as well since she sees them as her only family. When in a comfortable situation she proves to be a warm, witty and stubborn individual who stands up for what she believes.

History
Born to Marguerite Hawkeye, most assume that her father is her mother's husband, Berthold, and if one wasn't to examime her too closely she does appear to be so, having blonde hair as he does and the same sort of serious but calm demeanor. However there are those who note some similarities she possesses to a friend of her parents and fellow alchemical researcher Van Hoenheim, who was often seen at the family home during the time before Mrs. Hawkeye's pregnancy. Being a man more concerned with his research and the implications of it than the world of the real and concrete it's very likely that he never noticed the possibility of his wife's indiscretion, and after the death of Marguerite when Riza was only two no one saw it suitable to bring the matter up again. Eventually everyone who had any memory of such stories died or vanished when the world became a darker place.
Nevertheless Riza grew up in a mostly comfortable environment though without a good deal of interaction from her reclusive father. Being an alchemist he realized very early that his daughter was a Source and having an inkling of what the world was about to become he instructed her never to speak of it, then in one fleeting moment of fatherly protectiveness spread far and wide of his 'disappointment' in having such an unskilled daughter before retreating back to his study to work in silence. Unsure of what else to do with the girl who seemed determined to remain underfoot he sent her off to the best boarding school he could afford, a very reputable place known for its academic acumen. Though reserved and a bit introverted she did well there, always scoring near the top of her class and doing well athletically.
While she was in school the war broke out in full force, the military and other dissidents against the corporation and their hired lackeys at the highest ranks; on hearing both sides Riza found herself firmly supporting the 'rebels' and worked hard to graduate ahead of her class. At sixteen she accomplished this and, with her father's connections, found herself in the ranks of the Resistance. With her education, calm competence and innate gun skill she was quickly assigned as a sniper and took part in some of the most difficult battles of the civil war, making it through alive though perhaps a bit more bitter. Her opinion on alchemists did change though, especially after getting to better know some of those who had worked with her father. His student Roy Mustang, who she'd only seen in passing on her holidays from school, became her close friend and while she didn't share the secret of abilities she nevertheless trusts him almost completely.
After the resistance was considered 'crushed' and the movement became an underground 'conspiracy' Riza finally decided to move home to find it much as she'd left it, though her father was a bit more manic and depraved than he had been before. Seeing Riza's development and skills as a powerful boon he turned her first into his courier; when she proved to be completely adept at that he called on her as a member of the cause to save her research, as he was dying. Soon the coded tattoo of his life's research was coded onto her back, making her both a permanent bodyguard and legacy to information she would never be able to use. Never having been close to her father it was impossible for her to feel betrayed; instead she accepted it as a necessary action to strengthen what she stood for.
Only a few weeks after her eighteenth birthday, which passed without notice, Riza's father finally wasted away, dying at his desk while rereading his research. After arranging his funeral Riza did as she'd been instructed to do, gathering prepared messages to deliver to Berthold's correpondents and securely placing them inside the lock-box she always carried. She then gathered the last of her supplies and left her home. Since then she hasn't returned to her family estate, preferring to deliver her father's messages between the other missions for her cause.
